In villages across Rajasthan, community members gather around a freshly dug pit, settle a young sapling into the earth, and press the soil firmly with their hands. For Shree Guru Jambeshwar Sewa Sansthan (SGJSS), moments like these are the heart of its environmental mission — and a living continuation of the Bishnoi ecological tradition from which the organisation takes its name.
Founded in 2007 and inspired by Guru Jambheshwar’s teachings on the protection of trees and wildlife, SGJSS treats conservation not as a one-day event but as a community practice. Through tree-plantation drives, it brings together women, elders, schoolchildren, and local volunteers to plant native species suited to Rajasthan’s arid landscape — trees that provide shade, fodder, fruit, and long-term ecological stability.
What makes these efforts endure is community ownership. Saplings are planted by the very families who will water and protect them, ensuring survival well beyond the planting day. SGJSS pairs plantation with awareness, explaining why green cover matters for groundwater, soil health, and resilience against a changing climate.
Environmental conservation sits alongside SGJSS’s work in rural livelihoods, women’s empowerment, health, and education, reflecting a belief that a healthy environment and thriving communities grow together.
